Current Artist In Residence

Mathew Chamakkala

Mathew Chamakkala is an emerging visual artist based on Long Island, working across abstract and realistic styles. His work explores texture, surface, and layered materials, inviting viewers to slow down and engage closely with the physical presence of each piece.

Art runs through Chamakkalaʼs family history. His maternal grandfather was an art teacher in Kerala, India, and decades later, his mother discovered painting in her eighties—proof that creativity can surface at any stage of life. Largely self-taught, he has further shaped his practice through training with local Long Island artists.

Blending traditional techniques with tactile elements, Chamakkala draws inspiration from everyday subjects and expressive abstraction. His work is featured online, including on Saatchi Art, and reflects a deeply personal exploration of memory, material, and surface.
